WILY helps some of the world's most trusted brands create experiences that engage consumers and drive them to retail. Recently, we helped adidas promote their brand new Originals store in Vancouver, BC, with a campaign built on near-field communication (NFC) technology for a tap-to-win contest. Before diving into the case study, let's unpack what NFC actually is, and how brands can put it to work for customer activations.
NFC works by using a device, like a smartphone, or in this case a tablet, to read information stored on inexpensive NFC tags. Here, adidas used "Key Cards" that told the NFC reader whether the cardholder had won. NFC technology also powers identification, ticketing, time and attendance, loyalty and membership programs, secure access (physical or device-based), transit usage, and payment processing.

ASK
Build excitement around the new adidas Originals store in Vancouver, BC, while driving consumers to retail through a flash contest and engagement campaign.
SOLUTION
Teased by hints on Twitter, @adidasCA followers were invited to a secret location in Vancouver to pick up an NFC-enabled adidas Hype Key Card and register for a chance to win a limited edition pair of adidas shoes. Only the first 150 people to arrive received a Key Card, and only 50 prizes were up for grabs. On the day of the store opening, Key Card holders tapped their card at the in-store kiosk to find out if they'd won.
